Italian citizenship in California

Mainly: your Italian ancestor's birth record from the comune where they were born, their naturalization records from USCIS or NARA (or proof that none exist), and the birth, marriage and death certificates for every generation, which come from the state or county vital records office. US records need an apostille from the Secretary of State of the issuing state and a translation into Italian.

It might. Since March 28, 2025, anyone born outside Italy who holds another citizenship is recognized only if an exception in Law 74/2025 applies. The main one: your father, mother, grandfather or grandmother holds, or held at death, only Italian citizenship. The others: one of your parents lived in Italy for 2 consecutive years as an Italian citizen before you were born, or you filed your application, had an appointment date assigned, or filed a court case by March 27, 2025.
