Italian citizenship in the United States: Law 74/2025
Law 74/2025, which converted Decree-Law 36/2025 into law, changed the jure sanguinis rules as of March 28, 2025. Anyone born outside Italy who holds another citizenship is recognized only if an exception applies.
What you need to know
Exception: your father, mother, grandfather or grandmother holds, or held at death, only Italian citizenship
Exception: one of your parents lived in Italy for 2 consecutive years, already as an Italian citizen, before you were born
Applications, assigned appointment dates and court cases filed by March 27, 2025 keep the old rules

Italy's Constitutional Court upheld the rule in 2026 (judgment 63/2026). A question is pending before the EU Court of Justice; in the meantime, the law stays in force
